Striker Sam Vokes has said he hoping the warm weather training camp out in the Algarve will do Burnley the world of good as we look to get back to winning ways in the Premier League campaign.
With Sean Dyche taking the squad away for five days last week, Vokes feels that we’ll certainly see the benefits of the trip when back to back homes games against Southampton and Everton cycle round in the fixture list.
Speaking to the Official Site the Welshman said he felt the pause in the run of fixtures and a week away training would more than help us end our winless run of late.
‘It was great to get away with the lads and have a few days of tough training as well as some down time. Some results lately haven`t been great for us but we`re still in seventh place and that shows how strong we`ve been this season overall. I think getting away for a week was a chance to re-charge our batteries and now is the time to come back with two important home games and pick up some results.’
The trip to Portugal had been pre planned by the club following our FA Cup exit but Vokes thinks that with ten matches without a win, it certainly couldn’t have been timed better.
‘It`s been a big thing for us, since we got into the Premier League especially, making Turf a bit of a fortress. I think we`ve done that, as well as picking up points away from home this year, so it`s two games now where we need step on and pick up some results. We say we`re on a bad run of results but we`re still seventh in the Premier League, so it`s not a majorly bad thing.’
Vokes went on to say.
‘But for us it`s important we get back to performing well and picking up results. We have had a couple of bad results, but we also drew with City a couple of weeks ago, so there`s not too bad in there. It`s important we keep an eye on where we`re at and a couple of results and I`m sure we could be pushing on again. Over the last few years I think we`ve achieved a lot here, but to finish high up in the Premier League would be amazing for a club like Burnley and hopefully we can achieve that.’
Having only found the net three times so far this season and with his last strike coming against Southampton last November, Vokes will certainly be hoping the opposition prove lucky for him once again.
